With all our years of travel around the world, the excitement of new places and new events never fades, especially when we are invited to spend time in beautiful Thailand! Our 10-day adventure over New Years 2006 centered around 3 performances for a private international association at the stunning J.W. Marriott Phuket overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Nestled along Thailand’s west coast, wreathed with white sand beaches, and forested with lush tropical jungle, Phuket Island is the premier vacation resort destination in Thailand.

During our stay, we had time to explore gold-covered Buddhist temples, hike through the jungle to a remote waterfall, and visit with wild gibbons and elephants. We also toured nearby uninhabited islands to snorkel among a universe of colorful tropical fish. And we were overwhelmed by Thai hospitality. From the hotel staff to the man selling fresh coconuts at a roadside stand, the Thai people are consistently graceful, sophisticated, and considerate.

But nothing compares with the experience of performing outdoors, under the stars, for an amazing audience on New Years. Our event day started with the usual preparations of stage, music equipment, and costuming. From that point on, the day just became more and more magical. The stage overlooked the ocean and pool, and as sound-check progressed and the band ran through some upbeat tunes, a towel-draped crowd gathered around the stage, clapping and cheering each song. Trains of elephants ambled down the beach behind us. Then the dance floor was painstakingly transformed into an intricate design made entirely of fresh flowers, soon to be exuberantly tossed onto the band by the children.

As the sun set on the horizon, a deep orange glow suffused the entire scene. The stars were just emerging as the band started the night with a few elegant dinner instrumentals that perfectly suited the chic all-white theme chosen by association for their event. Each family had traveled from around the world to celebrate the New Year together in Thailand. On this auspicious night, they had created giant paper lanterns that when lit, would sail up into the night sky to eventually ignite in a cascade of sparks. We watched as each family placed their wishes for the New Year into their lantern, lit the candle within, and let the lanterns rise. As the band broke into the dance party, the sky was lit not just with the stars and moon, but dozens of glowing floating lanterns.

In short, this enchanted evening was the perfect end to what had truly been a magical trip. We felt privileged to be part of such a beautiful event. There is an old adage that says, if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. This particular event absolutely drove that point home for us. We were honestly grateful to have been able to participate in it.
